Freelance Gig Allotted to Garba:

Jake (a client) would like to inquire if it is ethical to adopt growth boosters for breeding livestocks putting into consideration any possible impacts it might have on the health of the consumers.

Kindly advise him appropriately.

Garba’s Resolution:

Hello Jake,

Growth boosters or growth promoters for breeding livestocks are divided into three major categories:

i. Growth hormones(Natural and Synthetic)

Hormones that occur naturally such as oestradiol, progesterone and testosterone, etc and  synthetically prepared hormones such as  zeranol, trenbolone

and melengestrol are implanted or injected into cattle in various stages of maturity. Melengestrol is a feed additive and is not injected, but added to the feedstock.

COST AND STAGES( Cost may vary from place to place)

1.Post-Natal Stage           $13 to $17 per dose to each livestock depending on the brand

2. Maturity Stage              $18 to $26 per dose to each livestock

ADVANTAGES OF HORMONES AS GROWTH BOOSTERS

a. They help animals improve their nutrient absorption

b. They help to improve meat quality by decreasing the deposition of fat, producing the lean meat that consumers desire

c. They  increase feed efficiency, thereby allowing more growth with less feed

d. They increase lactation period in cows when injected with bovine growth hormone (rBGH). This hormone interacts with other hormones in cows’ bodies to increase the amount of milk they produce.

e. Growth promoting hormones enhance endogenous estrogen production and growth.

ii. Antimicrobials

Antimicrobials refer to medicine that destroys or inhibits microbes and is administered at a low, sub therapeutic dose. The use of antimicrobial for growth

promotion has arisen with the intensification of livestock farming. They are used as feed supplements. This has been used worldwide for over 50 years.Examples are Glycolipid,Orthosomycin,Vancomycin,Quinupristin, etc

COST AND STAGES      ( Cost may vary from place to place)

1.Post-Natal Stage           $8 to $13 per dose to each livestock depending on the brand

2. Maturity Stage              $12 to $19 per dose to each livestock

ADVANTAGES OF ANTIMICROBIALS AS GROWTH BOOSTERS

They  reduce the enteritis diseases whose onset is favored by incomplete development of the immune system during the first weeks of life; and in adult animals, to prevent the onset of feed-induced pathologies (acidosis in steers),etc.

iii. Probiotics

These are live microorganisms capable of inducing a beneficial effect on the balance of microorganisms in the digestive tract.

As the main category of probiotics, oligosaccharides have attracted a great deal of commercial attention; several types are currently produced and used as “additives” for breeding animals: Their limited inclusion in the diet (usually 0.1 to 0.3%) may improve weight gain, the feed conversion ratio and the health status.

ADVANTAGES OF PROBIOTICS AS GROWTH BOOSTERS

a. They are used in ruminants to manipulate certain biochemical events and the microbial composition of the rumen.

b. Feed rations added  with a probiotics named S. cerevisiae reduces the production of lactate and stabilizes the pH.

c. They  stimulate microorganisms which are present in the intestinal tract .

COST AND STAGES    ( Cost may vary from place to place)

1.Post-Natal Stage           $9 to $15 per dose to each livestock depending on the brand

2. Maturity Stage              $11 to $19 per dose to each livestock

EFFECTS/DISADVANTAGES

Most of these growth boosters have been tested and found highly recommended for livestock breeding provided  when they are used as directed by physicians according to maturity stage of livestock. Therefore, it is strongly advisable to use growth boosters to improve livestock production. To the consumers, livestock breed using these good growth promoters are healthy, more nutritious and contain more proteins. These promoters are majority certified by WHO,FAO ,etc

I hope this provides you  an optimum insight on growth promoters for breeding livestock. Thanks as I await your kind response.
